Discover Menorca: A Serene Escape in the Balearic Islands
Located off the Eastern coast of Spain, Menorca is one of the four Balearic islands along with Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Though we haven't explored all of its island neighbors yet, it’s hard to beat Menorca’s mix of wild beauty and laid-back charm.
We experienced the island before the busy summer season, though we did still squeeze in a boat cruise and braved the chilly May waters. Between the undeveloped stretches of island and the bustling port towns of Mahon and Ciutadella, Menorca strikes a beautiful balance. The design forward hotels and boutiques were also a highlight for me (more on this below). For me, the pace of life is just right, not to mention the food is exceptional including specialties such as spicy sobrasada sausage and exquisite local cheeses.
Where to stay in menorca
A Note on Hotels: While most destinations on the island are within a 45-minute to one-hour drive, we opted to stay in different areas because I love discovering beautiful spaces. If you prefer a single home base, that’s definitely an option too. It’s rare that I can wholeheartedly recommend every hotel from a trip, but in Menorca, each one was a standout!
Menorca Experimental
A secluded oasis set on an expansive stretch of lush land along the island’s south coast, Menorca Experimental became an instant favorite. The design is impeccable, blending rustic charm with contemporary elegance, and the food is nothing short of superb. In fact, one of my most memorable meals from the trip was at their restaurant—a true standout in an already remarkable stay.
This is a charming rural retreat on the eastern side of Menorca, blending the elegance of a historic farmhouse with a serene, slow-paced atmosphere. The design is classic and unfussy, allowing the natural beauty of the surroundings to take center stage. With excellent food that highlights local flavors and a peaceful setting perfect for relaxation, this hotel offers an unforgettable stay.
Hotel Sant Joan de Binissaida is located between the towns of Es Castell and Sant Lluís and is approximately a 10-minute drive from the center of Mahón
Hotel Tres Sants
Hotel Tres Sants is a beautifully restored 18th-century mansion in the heart of Ciutadella, now an intimate, family-run boutique hotel with just eight rooms. The painted, textured walls, elegant four-poster beds, and the utterly charming breakfast space—opening onto a serene courtyard—all add to its almost whimsical allure. A stay here feels like stepping into a hidden gem where history and warmth intertwine effortlessly.
*Update: This property is no longer in operation. However, see Hotel Can Araya for their latest offering in Ciutadella.

This fun, funky boutique hotel in Mahón has the friendliest host at the ready with recommendations. There’s a large breakfast space downstairs serving up fresh local eats, too.
MENORCA HIGHLIGHTS: ACTIVITIES, SIGHTS & BITES
EXPLORE MENORCA’S CAPITAL
Mahón is a fantastic city for a leisurely stroll, whether you’re winding through its historic streets or taking in the views along the bustling port. As the island’s main harbor, it has a unique energy—lively yet never rushed. The waterfront is lined with restaurants and bars, perfect for stopping in for a drink or a meal while watching boats drift by.
Beyond the port, Mahón’s old town is full of charm, with narrow lanes, elegant Georgian-style architecture (a remnant of British rule), and plenty of small boutiques to explore. The Mercat des Peix (fish market) is a great place to sample local specialties like sobrasada, Mahón cheese, and freshly caught seafood. History lovers will appreciate the Church of Santa Maria, home to an impressive 19th-century organ, or the Museum of Menorca, which offers insight into the island’s past.
Kayak in Es Grau.
Just a short drive from Mahón, Es Grau is one of Menorca’s most picturesque coastal spots and a gateway to the stunning Parc Natural de s’Albufera des Grau—the island’s most important nature reserve. This protected area offers calm, shallow waters, making it an excellent place for kayaking,
The coastline here is rugged and unspoiled, with little coves, sea caves, and rocky outcrops that beg to be explored. One of the highlights of kayaking in Es Grau is reaching the Illa d’en Colom, a small, uninhabited island just offshore.
Horse back ride on the beach & ON THE Cami de Cavalls
The Camí de Cavalls is a historic trail that circles the entire island, offering breathtaking views of Menorca’s rugged coastline and unspoiled landscapes. Exploring it on horseback with a friendly guide from Son Bou Rutas a Caballo was an unforgettable way to experience it. Riding along the beach and through the wild terrain felt like stepping into a different era, which I love!
Visit Binifadet Bodega
Our lunch at Binifadet Bodega was a perfect blend of great food, local wine, and a serene setting. Nestled among the vineyards, the open-air terrace made for a dreamy spot to linger over a meal.
They also offer guided visits and wine tastings.
Take A Boat Tour
Leaving from Cala Galdana, this was a chill 1/2 day excursion that allowed us to see certain coves hard to reach by car. (Apparently during summertime these coves become large boat parties!) Even though it was a bit overcast, we had a nice experience with the folks at Menorquina Charter.
Visit the Punta Nati Lighthouse
Perched on Menorca’s dramatic northwestern coast, Punta Nati Lighthouse dates back to the early 20th century and remains active today. This stark yet striking lighthouse stands against a rugged landscape of dry stone walls, windswept terrain, and an endless horizon where the Mediterranean meets the sky. Though we ventured there during the day, sunset is said to be a prime time to visit.
The drive to Punta Nati feels otherworldly, with a narrow road cutting through arid, rocky fields. Once you arrive, a short walk takes you to the lighthouse itself. For a while, it felt like we were the only ones out there, standing at the edge of the island with nothing but the sea stretching endlessly before us.
EXPLORE THE Port City of Ciutadella
I quickly fell for this charming port city on Menorca’s west coast, where good design and artisan shops are easy to find.
Can Faustino was another hotel on my Menorcan radar, and while we didn’t stay overnight, dinner was the perfect way to experience the property. A great decision—the courtyard made for a wonderfully romantic setting to enjoy cocktails and a meal.
